The countdown continues

We assume like all southern college football fans, you ocassionally, if not religiously follow Spencer Hall and his (and his cohorts) often amazing work over at everydayshouldbesaturday.com. Their annual countdown is a thing of beauty, and now just inside of two weeks, today gives us this gem.

Now tell me, does this look like a man you want to disappoint? Like a man who would comfort you in times of failure with a "That's OK son, think about life's bigger picture", or a man for whom failure is wholly and absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in any way, shape, or form? Like a man who could mold young men from the Empire State of the South into a lean, mean, violent machine of football majesticness? We think so too.

  1. This guy's a screamer. Think a QB could get away with throwing 3 interceptions in one game and not being benched & screamed at with this coach? Think he'd put his arm around a kid for droppin the rock in the red zone? Think he wouldn't get in his OC's face after not scoring in the first half against a conference USA team? Think this guy would blame losses on things like bad bounces?

  2. Or the heat Tweet. Don't forget, late October in Jacksonville is just brutal weather our boys in Athens just can't deal with.

  3. Right on. If you lose, take it like a man, admit you got whooped, and correct it. But to make up these lame excuses, if we only had AJ, if it was cooler, if we would have had more equipment to work out with (like the new Notre Dame coach had any kind of S & C facility at Cincy), uniform colors, inexperience, new scheme, etc.

90% of the time, when an org fails for year, it's management/leadership.

  4. Organizations that enjoy success often become adverse to wise and calculated risk, preferring instead to keep the status quo. Thus the DC hangs around too long , promoted past his ability and of course the directional kicking etc. I’ve watched some of the local development firms plod along on projects, taking 18 months and longer to complete a project that could be done in 14 or 15. Make no mistake pushing a 200 unit multifamily project along at that pace is no picnic. You become part of that theme. Believe me it doesn’t make you into a touchy feely husband/Dad. I imagine coaching is the same way. Its hammer time all the time. “The candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long.” Seems like CMR started delegating a little early and his delegates weren’t/aren’t ready to step up that much? I sure am ready for the ponies to trot into Hotlanta and for the Dawgs to GATA and ride back into the winners circle.

  5. Richt definately misjudged Willie Martinez's skills. What happened was, Richt was looking for a DC when he first got to Georgia, and he knew the defense ran by Willie at the Div 2 level was really good, but Richt wasn't sure if was bcause of Willie, who was laid back, or Van Gorder, Willie's Asst who was a screamer. Turned out, that defense was successful because of Van Gorder, not Willie. So when Van Gorder left, Willie was promoted. Big mistake.

  6. Grantham was a solid hire, Saban tried to hire Grantham a couple of times. Grantham knows his stuff. But Bobo is just awful, 15 points a game versus ranked teams--10th in the SEC??? Last in SEC in TO margin against ranked teams? 10th in SEC in rushing? Awful.

  7. Erk'd, your description of Willie/BVG is a bit off. Neither was at a D2 school, as Central Michigan is in the MACtion, and is a Big 10 whipping boy. They are D1. If I recall correctly, Richt remembered Martinez (who he played with at Miami) and Van Gorder's mid 90s Central Florida Ds giving him significant problems, and liking what they did. They were together at Central Michigan before BVG took off for a year as DC at Western Illinois, leaving Willie at Cent. Michigan for a year before rejoining on Richt's original staff.

  8. I stand corrected. What I was trying to say is Richt picked the right guy in Van Gorder and then followed it up by not realizing Martinez had gotten to where he was riding Van Gorder's yelling and Martinez wasn't a screamer, but a hugger. Grantham's a screamer, so all is retored there, I think.

  9. BVG was DC at West Illinois in 2000 before coming to Georgia. Martinez was Asst Head Coach at C. Mich in 2000 before coming to Georgia. Willie was a bad hire.

  10. I wouldn't say he rode Van Gorder, Willie had his own attributes that made him a helluva positional coach, but a horrible choice as a big time DC. His secondaries were awesome, when that was his sole responsibility. When he had double duty as DB coach and DC, his players suffered immensely. But as a strict DB coach his list of quality speaks for itself--Thomas Davis, Greg Blue, Tra Battle, Tim Jennings, Demario Minter, Bruce Thornton, Decory Bryant, etc were all excellent players.

  11. If Bobo's QB throws 3 int's against Florida for the 4th straight year, Richt MUST fire Bobo. Inept and inexcusable. First, Stafford throws 3 in 2008. Then Cox throws 3 in 2009. Then Murray throws 3 in 2010. This is your #1 division rival--that's the best ya got?

  12. I still say Willie as DC was a terribly bad hire. The points allowed were atrocious and got worse every year. Agreed, stout as DB COACH.

  13. Grantham put together a mean, experienced staff on the defensive side. Bobo's staff is a bunch of goofballs. Richt gave his RB Coach a raise last year after all those red zone fumbles and sacks (what PassPro?), and after finishing 10th in rushing in the SEC. Give the man a Raise!

  14. Good stuff there fellas, one of the things I think that put a hole in the ship as well. Was some of the guys that put a UGA uniform on, never ever should have had the opportunity. These were guys BEFORE Ealey and his ilk. When I played backyard ball in high school whoever won the game, they had the grand opportunity to goad the losers with chants of "Give us some more dogs these here don't bite" I think we had a few to many Dawgs who did'nt bite. I will forever be tormented by the sight of Bryan Evans chasing other teams recievers. Anyways CC my brother, been meaning to ask you something and see how old school you are. Do you remember any of these old school wrasslers El Mongol, The Assassins, Mr. Wrestling 1 and 2, The Anderson Bros, Thundebolt Patterson ( I saw him whip Ole Andersons ass in 1 min and 15 sec and then took the microphone and donked him in the head) and yes Rickey Smiley is good, have you heard the one where he's talking to dead black entertainers in heaven? He talks to James Brown, Micheal Jackson, Martin Luther King on the phone James Brown will have water running outta your eyes.Carry on my esteemed homeboy, til next time peace!!

Gettin' Heaven on the main line is some greatness. Have you heard when he is the drug dealer that has been locked in the trunk of a Cutlass in the projects and wants the locksmith to come get him out?

Oh Baby let me tell you sumthin',Jack you know I remember them oldies but goodies. I remember the Minnesota Wrecking Crew pre-Arn and then when Arn came up they made him Olie's brother. I remember the Assasin and his great feud wit' Da Dream. Technically you are a tad ahead of me. That is mid to late 70's and I was hittin' my stride in the early to mid 80's. However, when you have a brother and cousin that are the same age and both older...you become old school beyond you days.
