S&G Talks Defensive Strategy for Boise

We here at Sports and Grits are very excited to be joined today be Coach Gary Patterson and Coach Dick Bumpas.  Coaches, thanks so much for stopping by and talking with a couple of Ol'Dawg Homers about UGA's first opponent of the season, Boise State.
Patterson: IT'S A PLEASURE TO BE HERE WITH YOU!

Bumpas:  Likewise boys, it's a pleasure.  However, I gotta be honest with y'all we were a little hesitant to show up what with the un-healthy obsession y'all have with us.

Rider:  With all due respect Coach Bumpas I think you mean our un-healthy obsession with Awesomeness.

Bumpas: Well.....I can't disagree with you there.  But listen y'all have a fine staff over at Georgia, don't be so hard on em'.  Richt is a great coach and Bobo ain't that bad.

Rider:  Oh, so you think Richt and Bobo are as good as you and GP?

Bumpas: HA! No. I was just being nice, it felt sorta weird I ain't been nice since 1973.  I gotta be honest....I don't like the way it feels.

Rider:  Coach Patterson lets start with you.  If you were fortunate enough to have all the speed and talent that we have at Georgia as opposed to a bunch of 1 and 2 star recruits at TCU; how would you attack Boise's offense?

Patterson: I'D BRING THE HOUSE!

Rider:  So you would call an all out blitz on the first play, interesting.

Patterson: NOT ON THE FIRST PLAY ON EVERY PLAY!

Rider: Every play?

Patterson: ABSOLUTELY!  IN THE 4-2-5 WITH UGA SPEED WE COULD LEAVE ONE SAFETY PLAYING CENTER FIELD AND TWO CORNERS IN COVERAGE.  THEIR SPEED WOULD BE ENOUGH TO CONTAIN BIG PLAYS SHOULD MOORE SURVIVE THE FIRST TWO OR THREE HITS.  THREE IN COVERAGE LEAVES LEAVES 8 TO BLITZ.

Rider: What about you Coach Bumpas?

Bumpas: Same thing.  Except I'd tell my boys that if a Boise player tries to dip out of bounds--don't pull up just, blow him up.  We'll take the 15 yards.  It's what like I like call Setting the Tone.

Rider:  Isn't that considered a dirty hit?

Bumpas: No such thing as a dirty hit, son.

  1. Here's how you beat boise:

    1- Nevada
Boise jumpd out to a big lead, and then got conservative, which allowed for a comeback. Nevada rolled for 230+ rush yards in 2nd half, stuffed boise's run to 8 yards in 2nd half. 50%+ on off 3rd down conv, held Boise to 40% 3rd down conv. Had 28 1st downs. Outrushed Boise by 120 yards. Possession was 10 min + for Nevada. Moore only complete 2 of 7 15+ yard passes, down from his 65% av. Made Boise use special teams, kicker missed 2 field goals.

    2- TCU 2008

"They had better athletes than we've ever seen," Johnson said. "They played with so much heart. You didn't look over there one time and say, 'We broke them.' They knew they were going to come back and they believed in themselves the whole time."

"The game plan going in was to stop the run and watch all the trick plays," said TCU safety Stephen Hodge, who had 10 tackles and an interception. "They know the trick plays."

Said Johnson: "You could see they were a little ready for what we had planned."

"What did they have, three, four field goals and a touchdown?" TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "I think that was the key -- not letting them have their plays they needed to do."

BSU had to settle for field goals by Brotzman three times after getting inside the 20. Brotzman also missed a 38-yard attempt.

"I knew a couple of those field goals were going to come back to haunt us," Petersen said. "We were trying too many field goals. One of them had to be a touchdown."

TCU won time of poss by 10+ min. Held Boise to 28 yards rush and got 285 yards rushing. Held Boise to 3, 3rd down conv. Forced 2 to's. O passing td's from Moore.

Gators eat boogers even though they know better.
Vols eat boogers because they don't know better.
Bama fans eat boogers because they consider them a delicacy.
