Post game thoughts

Yeah, we could complain if we wanted to. Lord knows everyone else will. Our offense missed chances and made plenty of mistakes. Our offense failed to ice a game when we just needed another first down, again. Our defense made plenty of mistakes and kept getting gashed on the ground. Blair Walsh still has the shanks, and what the hell was that with Franklin and Grantham at the end? We have a lot of extracurriculars out that, and that's a recipe for multiple personal fouls if not an ejection of two against Florida. And the special teams. Oh the special teams issues.

But for all the complaints, it's still a road win in the SEC. Vanderbilt has struggled the past two weeks, but have talent. And they also have a ton of Georgia kids who were bound to want a little bragging rights and fight hard. Meanwhile, here we were on a back to back road trip, against a struggling, inferior opponent. It's a classic trap game, and we survived. Our defense made enough plays to get the win. Our offense made enough plays to get the win, and we did it without our best outside threat in Mitchell and our best playmaker playing minimal minutes. Letting Crowell get a reduced pounding should make him that much fresher for the Cocktail Party. With Ogletree back, that adds one more playmaker on defense to a unit that's not Bama and not LSU and was bound to have a bad game. So we burned that bad game against a team where we still clawed our way to a win.

Yeah, there's things to complain about. But all in all, we got a win and survived. And we did so with few bumps and bruises, and the ability to get healthier with Crowell, Mitchell, and Ogletree. So when we get to Jacksonville in two weeks, we should be healthier, more focused, and ready for a brawl. Last night, we were none of those things, and we still won. And we still control our own destiny for a trip to Atlanta.

Survive and advance my friends, survive and advance. Now let's get ready to Party.

  1. You can't win SEC games passing the ball. We got away from our identity as a running team, previous 4 games, had only thrown 26 attempts or less, in this game, threw 37 passes.

In 2010, in losses, Murray had 27 passes vs. Ark (loss), 31 vs. MSU (Loss), 29 vs. Col (Loss), 37 vs. Fla (Loss), 28 vs. Auburn (Loss), 38 vs. UCF (Loss).

In 2011, in 4 of 5 wins, Murray threw for 26 times or less and got wins. The Vanderbilt game Murray threw 37 times, and almost lost.

In 2 losses, in 2011, Murray threw 29 times.

    Bottom line:
The more Murray puts the team on his back, the more games you lose.

I expect Florida & Auburn to stop the run, and get Murray up around 29+ pass attempts.

  3. I don't care how we win as long as we win , going 13-0 with one point victories each time is still 13-0 fuck those moral fucks that say we don't deserve this win.

  4. In 2010, in 6 of our losses, Murray had 27-38 pass attempts.

In 2011, in 2 losses, Murray had 29 pass attempts, and in 4 wins leading up to Vand game, Murray had 26 or less attempts. Murray threw 37 times against Vand, and almost lost it.

Can't win putting ball in Murray's hands against Fla & Aub. They'll blitz, stack 8 in bix, and try and get Murray's attempts up around 29+.

  5. Vanderbilt's Head Coach outcoached Mark Richt. Had a better gameplan.

    1) Take advantage of the fact Richt's too cheapt to hire a Special Teams coach.
Kick off return for TD, 2 missed field goals, fake punt for 40+ yards, and blocked a punt.

    2) Force Murray to beat you throwing the ball.
Did a great job of stuffing the run with blitzes and 8 in the box. In reveiwing game video, they blitzed on 80% of plays. Got the interception late in the game from Murray to get back into it, and the 3 and outs.

    3) Run the ball
Using the Lattimore plan, Vanderbilt ran between the tackles for 180+ yards.

And if their WR hadn't dropped the pass at the end of the game in the end zone, Vand wins.

  6. well, it helps to have a RB with a pulse in order to avoid this. Also, does anyone else think our pass blocking has improved exponentially, while our run blocking has gone to shit?

agreed. a win is a win is a win. I'll take 5 in a row with a week off before Jax

  7. Jack,
    2 and 3,
remember, we were resting his best target in mitchell, and we didn't want to use much of Crowell. With that in mind, plus the weak team a week before a bye and a huge game, we were gonna let up a bit. We aren't gonna run well without Crowell; we haven't all year. The team we saw last night will NOT be the team we see in two weeks.

I'm overly anxious to see that team, good or bad.

  8. Jack - I wasn't aware that Coach Richt has to pay coaches out of his own pocket.

  9. Crowell played in both of the losses. We just passed too muhc against Boise & SC. Murray is not posied enough to carry the team, he makes too many mistakes when the game depends on him. 3 int's vs. SC?

If UF or Auburn can force Murray to throw 29 times or more, they'll win the game.

  11. Anon,
Rambo played it smart. Remember the fumbled return earlier? It's not like the guy practices securing the ball during the week. If the offense does it's job, it's the smart play and the right move.
