Add another to the paddle boats, tank tops, and ice cream machine influenced recruiting decisions

What sways kids in recruiting is often utterly hysterical. Courtney Abbott, former Atlanta Westlake OL, said he chose Florida St because of the weather and wanting to be able to wear tank tops year round. Another offensive lineman chose Florida and Ron Zook because he said they had a good time together in a paddle boat. Former Virginia head coach Bill Dooley, brother of Vince, used to tell a tale about a recruit who spurned him for another school because they had an ice cream machine in the cafeteria.

Well now, we can add proximity to Chik-Fil-A to those hilarious reasons, which must be an answer why the Big Ten and other Yankee or west coast schools just can't compete with the SEC.

"[It was] kind of the environment and plus they had no Chick-fil-A on campus," McKinzy said when asked why he didn't choose Clemson (scroll ahead to the 1:30 mark in the video). "You had to go like, probably like 15 minutes off campus to go to like a real restaurant. Their café was kind of small."

  1. You missed the best part of the article.......there is a Chik-Fil-A on campus!!! Did he not bring this downfall up to the coaches or did they just not know either? This is why you have to take a step back and just look at who you got, not you missed, when evaluating recruiting each year. Nobody can tell what these kids (or their grandparents for that matter) are going to do sometimes!

I don't know Clemson addresses, so I couldn't say if that's on campus or not. It is in Clemson, SC though.
